Making the PMO More Productive: A quest to find better ways to manage projects and get things done
In our recent #StratExLive webinar, international keynote project speaker and transformational leader Jack Duggal begins by conceding that while it’s cliché to say the world is changing fast, it’s still important to ask ourselves the following: Are we adapting to this change or still stuck using 100-year-old project management and PMO practices? Is there a better way?
Duggal reflects on his experience as a project manager and working with a PMO. He describes how initially his formal training and processes were successful, but over time, as the business environment and organizations were changing so quickly, projects would start to “DANCE” and the old school methods alone were no longer enough.
Duggal describes DANCE – Dynamic, Ambiguous & Uncertain, Non-Linear, Complex, Emergent – as the next generation VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous).
It is impossible to forecast or plan for the degree of change and volatility that can be triggered by the unexpected. – Jack Duggal
The tools and processes we are familiar with in the traditional project management discipline are good as a starting point, but as projects get more complex, the planning and risk management will eventually become detrimental and box us into one way of thinking.
You might be wondering, in the context of project-based work, what does it mean to DANCE?
Duggal believes that in a DANCE situation, the more you try to plan and control things, the messier it gets. Risk management plans, while effective, can easily fluctuate and lull you into a false sense of security. As a result, a different mindset is required to navigate the unknowns.
Duggal goes further in depth and discusses the following in this webinar:
- The history of business & management focus
- The characteristics of traditional versus next generation project management approaches
- How we can learn to DANCE
